Enteric Diseases

Flies are important vectors of several enteric infections affecting humans and domestic animals (Fotedar, 1992, Graczyk, 2001).

They have been confirmed as disseminators of:

  • Cholera (Fotedar, 2001, Greenberg, 1973, Kotenok, 1977, Stork, 1979)
  • Salmonellosis (Bidawid, 1978, Olsen, 2000)
  • Shigellosis (Cohen, 1991 , Levine, 1991)
  • Colienteritis (Iwasa, 1999)
  • Campylobacter (Rosef, 1983, Shane, 1985)

There are also reports on transmission of porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE) through the housefly (Gough, 1983).
